Situational Hitting (Ancaster Baseball)

PrintSituational Hitting

Hitting isn't always about trying to hit a home run, or even hit to their weakest spot.  Below are just a few of the possibilities and what you should attempt to do.

You are the first batter of the inning
In this case your main objective is to get on base. This could be drawing a walk or getting a hit. Now is not a good time to try for a home run or to hit a fly ball. You don't want to be the first out right away. Try to hit the ball to a "hole" or weak spot in the defense and try to swing level so you don't make an easy fly out.

You are at bat with one out and nobody on base
Same thing as above. Your main goal is to get on base. Try to get something started. Do not try for a home run, and you should try to hit to a weakness or "hole". Try not to fly out. Swing level to prevent this.

You are at bat with two outs and nobody on base
Same as above. Your main goal is to get on base and not get out. This is not the time to "golf" the ball or try for a home run. Possible exception: If the score is close and your ahead, or you are ahead by a long ways (7 or more runs), and you have proven power, then perhaps you can try for the home run.

You are at bat with nobody out and a person on first
You should attempt to get on base, preferably by hitting the ball to right field. This increases the distance for the outfielder to throw the ball and increases the likelihood of the runner advancing to third. Do not try for a home run. Possible exception: you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power.

You are at bat with nobody out and a person on second
Same as above. You should attempt to get on base, preferably by hitting the ball to right field.  This increases the chances of the runner scoring, or at least advancing to third. No pop outs or trying for home runs. Possible exception: you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power. Then you could try for a home run.

You are at bat with nobody out and a person on third
Things become more interesting in this scenario. Your main concern is getting on base. Hit the ball to the weakness in the outfield. If the game is tied or you need one run to tie, now is the time to go for the deep ball. Attempt to hit a home run if you have the power. If you don't try to hit a pop fly to right field (if you do, you can hit the ball anywhere because you likely have the power to hit it deep enough no matter which field you hit it for the runner to tag up). Or if you are way ahead (7 or more runs) you can try for the home run. All around, this is generally one of the power-hitter's favorite situations.

You are at bat with one out and a person on first
Try to hit a single to right field. Your main objective is to get on base. Hitting it to right field increases the runners opportunity to advance to third base. Now is not a time for a pop fly or a home run. Possible exception: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power, then you could try for the home run.

You are at bat with one out and a person on second
Try to hit a single to right field. Your main objective is to get on base. Hitting to right field will increase the runners opportunity to advance to third base. Now is not a time for a pop fly or a home run. Possible exceptions: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power, then you could try for the home run.

You are at bat with one out and a person on third
Try to hit the ball to the weakness in the outfield. If the score is tied or your team is behind by one run, now is the time to try for the home run if you have the proven power. If not then attempt to hit a fly ball to right field. If the score is lopsided one way or the other, just try for a single to your opponents weakness.

You are at bat with two outs and a person on first
Try to hit a single to right field. This increases the runners likelihood of advancing to third. Your main responsibility is getting on base. Possible exception: You are ahead by a lot (7 or more runs) and you have proven power. Then you could try to hit a home run.

You are at bat with two outs and a person on second
Try to hit a single to right field. This increases the runners opportunity to advance to third. Your main responsibility is to get on base. Possible exception: You are way ahead (7 runs or more) and you have proven power. Then you could try for a home run.

You are at bat with nobody out and people on first and second
Your main objective is to get on base. You should attempt to hit a single to right field to give the second base runner a chance of scoring. No pop flys, no home runs. Possible exceptions: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power. Then you could try to hit a home run.

You are at bat with nobody out and people on first and third
Your main objective is to get on base. You should attempt to hit a single to the defenses weakness. No pop flys, no home runs. Possible exception: You are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power. Then you could try for a home run. You could also do this if you are behind by just one run or tied and it is late in the game.

You are at bat with nobody out and people on second and third
Your main objective is to get on base. You should attempt to hit a single to right field. This increases the chances of both men scoring. No fly balls or home runs unless the score is either tied or you are behind by one run. Possible exceptions: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power, then you could try for a home run.

You are at bat with nobody out and the bases are loaded
Here is a golden opportunity for a power hitter. If you have proven power, go for it. Now is one of your best chances to really go for it. Your main concern besides hitting the ball out of the park should be to hit it deep into the outfield in case you fly out. If you do not have home run power, or haven't proven that to yourself yet, try for a single to the weakness of the opposing outfield.  Possible exception: If you don't have home run power, and the score is tied or we are behind by one run and we are late in the game, try for a fly ball to right field. This will increase the chances of scoring.

You are at bat with one out and people on first and second
Your main objective is to get on base. Try to hit a single to right field. No pop-flys. No attempts at home runs. Possible exception: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power, you could attempt to hit a home run.

You are at bat with one out and people on first and third
Your main objective is to get on base safely. Try to hit a single to the defenses weakness in the outfield. No pop-flys. No attempts at a home run. Possible exceptions: If you are way ahead (7 or more runs) and have proven power you can try for a home run. The other possible situation is if you are tied or down by one run, you should try to hit a fly ball or home run to right field. This way we should score the needed run one way or another.

Then you could try to hit a home run or fly ball to right field.

You are at bat with one out and the bases are loaded
Here is another wonderful opportunity for the home run hitter. Give it a shot if you have proven power. If you don't have the power, just attempt to hit the ball to the defense's weakest outfielder.
